Redneck Craft Creator Al Hattie says that he’s always been creative and grew up learning various skills from welding to mechanics from his father. “Always a collector of things I “might use someday,” he says, “Then my wife told me the clean the garage and get rid of the junk.” What’s a guy to do? He started turning the metal junk into whimsical pieces or art or home decorations so it had a use. Out of curiosity, he brought his work to the Alderney Landing Market to see what people thought and got great support from market goers and staff.
Fast forward to almost 2 years later Al, who sells his often very humourous creations at shows around the province, says he’s very excited to meet more people at the Saltscapes Expo, and hopes that visitors to the show will enjoy what he does as much as he enjoys making his creations. He says, “Everything I use has had a past life and comes from thrift store finds, or sometimes a gift of metal from a past customer who thought of me and wondered what I might turn it in to. A non-working toaster or a fan is the beginning of a creation for me.” Drop by Al’s booth and see his work for yourself!
