When you aren’t satisfied with market offerings, do you complain about it? Nope—you create your own. That’s the basis behind Julain Molnar’s very popular Fresh Start Fauxmage, featuring artisanal vegan cheeses.

The PEI entrepreneur has been a primarily vegetarian eater for most of her life, and at times vegan, but she found the latter a challenge. She loved cheese, and found the commercial vegan cheeses found in stores somewhat lacking. So she began making her own cultured nut-based cheeses in many flavours. She began selling them at local markets, and they took PEI foodies by storm. That was three years ago, and business is booming.

Julain’s cheese are made in many flavours—creamy herb, chili lime, baked feta-style, monk’s cheddar-style, creamy pesto, and several cheesecake styles. Yes, you read that right—cheesecake! She uses local herbs in her products, and combines them with crushed almonds or cashews, coconut milk, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, garlic, olive oil—depending on the type she’s making, of course. You don’t have to be vegetarian or vegan to enjoy the cheeses—they’re ideal for those who are lactose intolerant, or just who enjoy delightfully made, good food.

Asked if she has a favourite, Julain confesses that she doesn’t—she loves all of her products, and so do her customers. Find out what all the excitement is about at Expo.
